The Pará rubber tree, native to the Amazon basin, was introduced to the Malay Peninsula in the 1870s. The area’s first rubber tree plantation was established in Singaopre and propagated at the Botanical Gardens. These rubber saplings eventually spread across Southeast Asia, becoming the world’s dominant rubber tree plantation and production.

Ribbed Smoke Sheet (RSS) is the industrial raw material resulting from natural rubber production, which begins with the tapping of the rubber tree, then the drying and smoking of the latex for preservation and finally ends up in many industries, from automobile to medical device productions.

The RSS Vessels pays homage to a material that has influenced our local material history and shaped our natural landscape. These vessels look at the possibility of showcasing rubber’s raw material as a part of our material landscape.
