Contrapunto is a collection of objects developed through the process of improvisation. Contrapunto or ‘counterpoint’ is defined as ‘a musical form involving the simultaneous sound of two or more melodies’ and ‘a decorative musical accompaniment (often improvised) added above a basic melody.’
In this work, Ruiz treats the found components (the injection-moulded bins) as the melody, laying the foundation for the pieces. He then adds wood components as support structures, serving as the counterpoint.
The coldness of the injection-moulded component is fused with the warmth of wood, where the resulting object is a product of an exploratory, improvised process.
This DIY customisation, when combined with industrial production, further reinforces the concept.

Bakong is a type of plant considered to be “invasive”, and grows abundantly in the Cagayan Valley region (Northern part of the Philippines).
These plants are then turned into pellets, and those pellets are then melted and injected into metal molds to produce the plastic bins that I used for my designs.
Instead of making totally new forms, I opted to use existing products from the manufacturer's catalog - saving a lot of material and energy resources, money, and time in the process. This way, we also do not need to produce thousands of pieces to meet the minimum order quantity.
